Our local league's Studies and Actions for 2010 and 2011 will be a continuation of the studies and actions initiated during 2008 and 2009. These will involve taking action in support of initiatives that will move Wisconsin Rapids Area towards becoming a sustainable community. Our league will be supporting sustainability projects initiated by those who participated in the Natural Step study circles.
The Natural Step Study Circles were created in early 2008 by the Citizens for a Clean, Green and Welcoming Community functioning through the Community Progress Initiative. The group's consensus is that recycling is important, but there are also other environmental priorities and key areas for creating a greener future for the Greater South Wood County Area. These involve:
- Creating awareness around businesses that recycle.
- Increasing community education efforts about the environment.
- Fostering Green and healthy schools.
- Investigating Eco-municipalities and sustainable practices.
Short term projects in progress include:
- Meet with the mayor and city planner to promote adoption of the eco-municipality concept.
- Promote recycling at community events.
- Increase school involvement in sustainable activities.
- Initiate "Choose to Re-use" programs.
- Preparation and Distribution of a South Wood County Recycling Guide.
Suggested long term projects for possible implementation include promoting:
- Composting at schools.
- Community Gardens.
- Use of rain barrels.
- Organizing home energy meetings.
